All White and Clean
5 Top tips to take extra Care of white Furniture
White furniture has a way of making any area look classy and elegant. Whether it is indoors or outdoors, white furniture looks beautiful, but it can, and will, get dirty easier than your dark coloured furniture.
Many homeowners steer clear of white or light-coloured furniture for the fear of their children or pets staining it. However, the truth is that all furniture needs cleaning; some colours may need to be cleaned a little more often than others. It all depends on where you live (if it’s dusty, you may need to clean your furniture more often), what type of home life you live (if you have children or pets, if you use the piece of furniture often or not) and what habits you practice (do you eat dinner or messy snacks on your comfy white sofa?)
Tips to care for your white furniture
1. Clean It Regularly
You might not like the some of it, but cleaning your furniture regularly is a given. Most dark furniture needs a good clean every 6 to 12 months. White furniture on the other hand, will need to be cleaned more often to prevent yellowing. Have your white upholstered furniture cleaned professionally every 4 to 6 months and slipcovers once every month to keep them fresh. You can use a portable carpet cleaner with upholstery cleaning detergent to do the cleaning.
2. Set Some Rules
Sometimes setting some rules is not a bad thing, especially when you have young children who have a tendency to have dirty hands and feet. Rules should include things like ‘no eating on the white sofa’ or ‘feet are not allowed on white cushions or the sofa’. You may also want to not allow pets on the white furniture. This may take some training to teach them that they are not allowed to jump up on certain pieces of furniture. All these rules will help to keep your white furniture in pristine condition.
3. Cover It Up
It may not be the easiest or most practical way to keep your furniture clean, but it works. Covering your furniture with a stain-proof sheet can protect the material from sticky fingers, muddy paws and accidental spills. Plastic fabric covers are the best material to protect your furniture from dust and dirt, plus they are easier to clean.
When you spend most weekdays at the office, you could through a sheet over your furniture to prevent dust from settling in and tarnishing its crisp whiteness. Although, why would you want to spend all that money on beautiful furniture just to cover it up. Rather, spend a little extra time giving it come attention to clean it and show it off to all your visitors.
4. White Wooden Furniture
Wooden furniture is obviously very different to care for and keep clean than upholstered furniture. Keep your white wooden furniture clean by gently wiping it down with a lightly dampened cloth or sponge, using vertical motions. It is recommended that you clean down your wooden furniture every week or two to keep it dust-free and looking great. Be sure to wipe up any spills up immediately to avoid damage to the wood. For tea, coffee or wine spills, or grease and oil stains you may need to use wood cleaner to remove the stain.
Should your wooden furniture develop any mildew spots, do not panic! They can easily be removed with a homemade solution of warm water and white wine vinegar. Spray the solution on the areas with mildew and leave it for 3-5 minutes before wiping it off with a cloth or sponge. White wooden furniture can also show scratches quite easily. Keep these covered up by using a good quality wood furniture polish. Avoid polishing it too often as this could make the area slippery.
5. Toothpaste is a great cleaner
When your white furniture suddenly starts looking a shade of yellow, toothpaste can be a helpful cleaner. Use a cloth to apply toothpaste to the yellowing area but be careful to leave any patches of water behind that will cause watermarks. Toothpaste is also a great cleaner to remove watermarks on wooden furniture.
Bring a bright and fresh feeling to any room with a white furniture set, and keeping it clean doesn’t have to be difficult. Keeping your white furniture clean can prolong the life of your beautiful furniture.
